Each year, end of October or early November, Atlantic Saury aka billfish attempt to migrate through the Strait of Canso out into the Atlantic Ocean. Since the 1950s when the Canso Causeway was constructed their path has been blocked and yet, year after year they attempt to pass through. The trapped schools of fish become dinner for all kinds of hungry birds and marine life. Cross the Canso Causeway at this time of year and it’s likely you’ll spot a whale or porpoise, definitely some bald eagles or gannets.
